11/30/2023 0 Comments Charge of the light brigade movie![]() Even though their working relationship was contentious, they brought out the best of each other as evidenced by the great films they made. But yet, their combined talents brought us Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, Dodge City, and The Adventures of Robin Hood. They famously didn’t get along very well. As I mentioned before,Curitz and Flynn went on to work together many times. Sol Polito did the gorgeous black and white cinematography. The film also features a score by Max Steiner, one of the most prolific composers at Warner Brothers at the time. But I go to films to escape, unless it’s a documentary. The plot does bend historical facts to create a more thrilling narrative. Flynn and de Havilland starred in many films together, and this is right up there with their best. Parts like this and Robin Hood were the ones he was born to play. In addition to having Flynn and de Havilland, there’s a stellar supporting cast that includes Nigel Bruce,Donald Crisp, and David Niven.Flynn is excellent as always playing the dashing hero. The battle scenes are really well filmed, especially the last one. The Charge of the Light Brigade is a really well made war picture, especially for 1936. It is there that Vickers leads the famous charge in the valley of death so famously depicted in the poem. The 27th Lancers are sent to Crimea, where Surat Khan has sought protection from his Russian allies. A chance for revenge comes when England goes to war with Russia. Henry Gordon) attacks the fort, killing everyone, including civilians. Geoffrey is sent out on patrol and Surat Khan (C. Of course Geoffrey knows nothing about it. But Campbell has fallen in love with Geoffrey’s brother Perry (Patrick Knowles) and Perry has also fallen in love with her. He’s engaged to Elsa Campbell (Olivia de Havilland,a frequent co-star with Flynn). Flynn plays Major Geoffrey Vickers,an officer with the 27th Lancers in India. It stars Errol Flynn,an actor who would collaborate with Curtiz multiple times in his career. It’s the title of a famous poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. No doubt the title The Charge of the Light Brigade sounds familiar. To start things off,let me tell you about a film of his from 1936 called The Charge of the Light Brigade. This month I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite films of his. That’s shocking for the man who directed Casablanca and The Adventures of Robin Hood, just to name a few. ![]() Curtiz is curiously absent from many greatest directors lists. As a documentary about him so eloquently put it: he’s the greatest director you’ve never heard of. This month my spotlight is on the films of director Michael Curtiz. Looks good, great garrison sets (actually built for real) amid the scorching heat, costumes are superb as expected and acting is solid from all the cast with solid direction from Warner stalwart Curtiz, its just a bit boring to be honest.Happy New Year, readers! Here’s to another great year of making film discoveries. This is where it gets more exciting and our swashbuckling hero Errol begins to shine.but not for long. Despite the fictional sub plots and characters this does play well if you can take all the talking, as with modern films you are waiting for the final big push and charge. The usual contracted players as mentioned, they all go well together and shows why Warner stuck them together for many more pictures. The final charge sequence is very good for a film of the this time but its clear where horses have died for the screen, impressive stunts and action but is it worth it?Īs for the film its pretty dull throughout, much loving between Havilland and Knowles, much war talk with Flynn and plenty of the 'stiff upper lip old boy'. Yes an earlier time for sure, animal rights stepped in to halt filming with the horrendous horse massacre on location but the fact they still got away with it and were able to even start shows a different attitude which does cast a nasty spell over this film. The stunt men must have earned their pay, yikes!! I was surprised how much of the film is quite dark to be honest, the massacre at Chukoti (made up) is not bloody of course but its pretty graphic as is the final charge where horses are clearly throw all over the place (200 actual horses were killed during filming). One of Errol's early films in a time when shooting wild cats or even pretending to was seen as fine and displayed with glee.
